About the Academy
The Affordable Green Academy is managed by the Center for Building Knowledge at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is a sister site to the Affordable Housing Design Advisor.
Intended Audience and Goals
The Academy was created to help developers, designers and builders of affordable housing incorporate green strategies into their every day practices. While there are many useful green building programs, specific, detailed guidance on how to implement green practices within the severely cost-constrained world of affordable housing is less common. This is what the Academy strives to provide.
Creation of the Academy
To better understand the needs of affordable housing providers a survey was posted on the Affordable Housing Design Advisor website that asks about current construction practices and the types of green guidance developers would find most useful. Following the first round of responses, the coursework was outlined and content was compiled. From the outset it was known that much of the information needed for the Academy was already available through various resources including the Building America program, the Enterprise Green Communities Program, the Department of Energy and Renewable Energy program and many others.
Project Advisory Group
The Green Academy would not exist without the support and guidance of its Advisory Group:
Dana Bourland, Vice President of Green Initiatives at Enterprise Community Partners,
Dan McCormick - Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation
Katherine Austin, AIA, Architect
Kathy Dorgan, AIA LEED AP, Dorgan Architecture & Planning
Project Funding
Funding for the Affordable Green Academy was provided by a private philanthropic organization.
